Dating to the mid 1970s - 80s this striking brooch is from the Mstera school of Soviet hand painted miniatures. Mstera was one of the four important Russian centres of lacquer miniature painting, alongside Palekh, Kholui and Fedoskino. Mstera traditionally worked in egg tempera with gold highlighting on lacquered papier-mâché. The painting depicts a winter scene with three horses pulling a sled. The brooch closes with an integrated safety pin catch. Signed “Мстёра “Тройка” (Mstera Troika). In perfect condition!
