Product Details

Antique R. Hall "Italian Buildings" transferware plate, approx 9 in. Date; c.1822-1841, the working dates of the R. Hall mark. No country of origin, so before the 1891 tariff act. Specs; Round plate, black transfer on white earthenware, approx 9 in. Center scene shows a woman and a seated child gathering flowers beside a large footed urn under a flowering tree, a small sailing boat on the water behind them, and a domed classical building with a colonnade across the water with mountains beyond. Wide border of full-blown roses and garden flowers worked into scrolled cartouches, beaded rim with traces of the original gilt line. The reverse is marked with a ribboned cartouche reading Italian Buildings over R. HALL. About; This is early Staffordshire and it feels like it in the hand. The body is a touch heavier, the glaze has that soft old surface, and the engraving is finer than anything made later. Black and near-black transfers are the scarce end of the color range. A real Georgian-in
