Printed backstamp shows a seated greyhound over TRADE MARK, E M and Co, B, NEWPORT, with ENGLAND above. | HISTORY: Edge, Malkin and Company worked the Newport Pottery in Burslem from 1870 until the firm went into liquidation in 1902. The seated greyhound trademark was registered in 1873, and the word ENGLAND standing alone in the mark, without Made in, places this piece after the 1891 McKinley Tariff Act -- so the window is roughly 1891 to 1902 and this platter is comfortably over a century old. The pattern is pure Aesthetic Movement: chrysanthemums and trailing ivy swarming the rim, and a rococo cartouche at the center framing a tiny lake scene with a sailboat and distant mountains.
