Pre-Columbian Veracruz Seated Figure Classic Veracruz, Mexico, ca. 600-900 AD Height: 14 in. Superbly modeled buff terracotta figure seated with hands resting on the knees, wearing large ear ornaments, a beaded necklace, bracelets, a short cape, and a tall headdress with surviving bitumen-painted geometric decoration. The upward gaze, parted lips, and deeply incised eyes create a calm, expressive appearance. Hollow construction with two rectangular rear firing vents typical of Classic Veracruz sculpture. An impressive display piece retaining excellent sculptural detail and traces of original surface decoration. Condition: Repaired from approximately eight original fragments with visible break lines and minor losses. Stable overall. Provenance: Ex Abell Auction, Los Angeles, California.
