SPECS: 12-sided paneled plate, approx 9 1/4 in diameter; purple transfer border with white reserved ivy and vine over pastoral vignettes, sepia-brown pastoral center with windmill, church and figures. DATE: circa 1863. George Woolliscroft potted at Tunstall, Staffordshire in two short runs, 1851-1853 and 1860-1864, and the diamond registry mark carries a year letter consistent with 1863 - inside the second run. HISTORY: The diamond is a British design registration mark, used 1842 to 1883, and the Roman numeral IV at its apex is the class for ceramics. It means the design was formally registered at the Patent Office, which gave the maker three years of protection against copying a detail worth having, because it pins a piece to a year rather than a decade. Woolliscroft was a small, short-lived firm, so marked survivors are genuinely uncommon next to the Adams and Ridgway output of the same years. CONDITION: Heavy all-over warm craze.
